Model Finishing School – An Initiative for Employability and Skill Development

Model Finishing School (MFS) is a pioneering initiative of the Government of Kerala (GoK) aimed at enhancing the employability, professional competence and career readiness of qualified youth in the State. It is a joint initiative of the IT Department, Government of Kerala, and the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD), with the support of leading industry partner Infosys. IHRD is responsible for the day-to-day administration and functioning of the institution.

The Model Finishing School was established with the vision of bridging the gap between academic education and the evolving requirements of the employment sector. While Kerala has a strong pool of educated and technically qualified youth, changing industry expectations and rapid technological advancements have created a growing need for additional professional, technical and employability skills. MFS addresses this need by providing industry-oriented training, practical exposure and career-focused skill development.

The first Model Finishing School was established in 2008 at the Science and Technology Museum Campus, Thiruvananthapuram, marking an important step towards creating a structured platform for professional skill development. Subsequently, the second Model Finishing School was established in 2010 at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor, Kochi, expanding the reach of the programme to central Kerala.

About IHRD

The Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) is an autonomous educational institution established by the Government of Kerala in 1987 with the objective of strengthening technical and higher education and developing skilled human resources for the State. Over the years, IHRD has established an extensive network of educational institutions across Kerala.

IHRD currently manages a wide range of institutions, including Engineering Colleges, Colleges of Applied Science, Model Polytechnic Colleges, Technical Higher Secondary Schools and Regional Centres, providing education and skill development opportunities to students across the State.

With its strong institutional network, experienced academic and technical workforce, and extensive experience in education and training, IHRD provides an ideal platform for strengthening the activities of the Model Finishing School.

Vision of Model Finishing School

Model Finishing School seeks to evolve as a centre of excellence for employability and industry-oriented skill development, preparing young professionals to meet the demands of the modern workplace. With the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence, digital technologies, automation, data-driven applications and emerging technologies, MFS can play a vital role in equipping Kerala's educated youth with the skills required for the jobs of the future.

Through stronger industry collaboration, modern training programmes, practical learning and career-oriented initiatives, the Model Finishing School can continue to contribute significantly towards building a future-ready, skilled and employable workforce for Kerala.
